The Nobel Question: why the winners of the world's most prestigious prize do not talk about Ukraine?

We have collected information on all living Nobel Prize winners, namely 44 Nobel Peace Prize winners and 20 for Literature. The first group of people has an internationally recognized status as "outstanding peacemakers," and the second group of people has earned the award for their impressive achievements in literature.

Why is the support of Ukraine by Nobel laureates so important?

Nobel Prize winners are leaders of public opinion and are listened to when making important decisions. Their assessments and words mean sometimes more than the words and assessments of famous actors with multimillion-dollar paychecks. The silence of these people is taken as unspoken approval.

Only one person from the list of the "most prominent" is capable of setting a bright precedent for the international community by taking the side of the aggressor. And at the same time, it provides a huge space for manipulation, which Russia will definitely use to justify any of its actions and crimes.

Looking ahead, we note that among the "world's greatest peacekeepers" there are supporters of Russia. Their words sound especially loud against the background of the silence and neutrality of many other participants.

Nobel's laureates and aid to Ukraine: charts and calculations from Molfar

"FOR" Ukraine – 35

• 3 people stated this once and never spoke about it again – we are talking about the signatures in the open letter of the Nobel laureates calling on Russia to stop the invasion of Ukraine and withdraw its troops.
• 21 people mentioned the war repeatedly in one way or another, and sided with Ukraine in the conflict.
• 11 people/organizations contributed financially to help Ukraine.

"ABSTAINED" – 1

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons does not express its position. It is worth noting that Russia's aggression against Ukraine critically deserves the OPCW's attention because of:

• precedents on the chemical weapons use by the aggressor, in particular against the defenders of Azovstal in Mariupol;
• Russia's groundless accusations against the Ukrainian government of preparing chemical attacks;
• representation of the Ukraine, Moldova and a number of other countries rights in the organization by Russia.

"NEUTRALITY" – 5

We have separately identified the International Historical, Educational, Human Rights and Charitable Society "Memorial" from Russia, which, according to their social media, operates in the context of protecting the rights of Russians: it covers the war through the prism of Russian citizens who would like to avoid participation in the war. This society won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022.

"AGAINST" Ukraine – 3

He positioned himself as an intermediary between Trump and Putin, often meeting with Putin personally. In 2016, he recommended that Trump recognize Crimea as Russian and lift sanctions against Russia in exchange for the withdrawal of troops from eastern Ukraine. In May 2022, at the World Economic Forum, he advocated a diplomatic settlement of the situation and a return to the status quo before the war, in effect, the transfer of eastern Ukraine and Crimea to Russia.

In August 2022, the organization published a report accusing Ukrainian troops of endangering civilians by basing themselves in cities, schools, and hospitals. The Russian ambassador to the UN cited the report as justification for Russia's occupation and militarization of the ZNPP. The press release sparked controversy, after which the head of Amnesty International's Ukrainian branch, Oksana Pokalchuk, resigned, as did the co-founder of Amnesty Sweden and eighty members of Amnesty Norway. Following the criticism, Amnesty International agreed to an external assessment of its controversial statement.

In March 2022, he said that the United States and the EU were intervening in the war indirectly by sending weapons and supporting Ukraine and the pro-Nazi government, which had been attacking and torturing the people of Donbas for eight years. The West is hiding the truth about the war, propagandizing and demonizing Russia. In February 2023, he said that "the Ukrainian people are just victims" and that "sending tanks to support a Nazi friend like Zelenskyy is dangerous. You are feeding a monster".

Of particular note: Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Esquivel calls Zelenskyy a "Nazi friend," the Ukrainian government "pro-Nazi," and Western politicians bad because of propaganda and demonization of the Russian Federation. The next step is to compare the results of prominent peacemakers with those of prominent writers. And we can immediately see in the graph that none of the writers and poets sided with the aggressor, although there were three of them among the "peacemakers."

• We have four people who declared their support for Ukraine only once in the same open letter from the Nobel laureates calling on Russia to stop the invasion of Ukraine and withdraw its troops;
• 6 people declared their support for Ukraine more than once;
• Ms. Olga Tokarchuk was the only one of all the Ukraine supporters who contributed financially to the aid.

"ABSTAINED" – 8

Kenzaburō Ōe (Japan), Gao Xingjian (China), Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio (France), Mo Yan (China), Alice Munro (Canada), Bob Dylan (USA), Peter Handke (Austria), Louise Glück (USA). They cannot be called friends of Ukraine because they are silent witnesses of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.

"NEUTRALITY" – 1 

This person is Abdulrazak Gurnah, a British citizen. It is ironic that he was awarded the Nobel Prize "for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fates of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents".

In the context of the war in Ukraine, he condemned the prejudice of Europeans against world wars: "It is not surprising that European countries show more sympathy for Ukrainians than Africans: it is their own family, they are their neighbors. Not surprisingly, it is sad that such human concern does not extend to Afghans or Iraqis. This has served to expose the biased attitude. It's the only positive thing we can get out of all this".

Helping Above All: Stories of Nobel Laureates Who Deserve Respect

Olga Tokarchuk – she is the only Nobel Prize winner in literature to have joined the financial aid to Ukraine.

Among the Nobel Peace Prize winners, there are also people who sympathize with Ukraine and are ready to contribute financially.

1. The UN Refugee Agency has been working in Ukraine since 1994. Through its website, the agency collects donations for Ukrainian refugees.
2. In April 2022, the Lech Walesa Institute (founded by Lech Wałęsa in 1995) joined the fundraising campaign for humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
3. In October 2022, at the initiative of the Women Lead Initiative, Jody Williams, Tawakkol Karman, and Leymah Roberta Gbowee visited Lviv and met with Ukrainian refugees in Kraków. The purpose of the meeting was to raise awareness about the war and to enhance the role of Ukrainian women in their struggle for peace and freedom. They also opened a €10 million fundraiser to support civil society projects in Ukraine for women leaders, activists, and entrepreneurs.
4. Médecins Sans Frontières, an independent international medical humanitarian organization, supplies medicines and medical equipment to Ukraine and transports patients.
5. The Obama Foundation's website provided a list of organizations to which people could donate money to help Ukraine.
6. The European Union's website has published possible options for a donation to help Ukraine.
7. A team from Mukwege Foundation and Global Survivors Fund visited Ukraine on a joint mission to assess the priorities, needs and strategies for supporting survivors of wartime sexual violence.
8. The World Food Program says it is helping three million Ukrainians with food.
9. Russian Dmitry Muratov: journalist, TV reporter, former editor of Novaya Gazeta sold his Nobel medal for $103.5 million and donated the money to UNICEF, which in turn "will help refugees and victims from Ukraine, especially children." In April 2022, an unknown person attacked Muratov with red paint in a train wagon with the words "Muratov, here's to you for our boys". Muratov received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work at Novaya Gazeta. The newspaper became "an advocate for democracy and freedom of expression in Russia". Six of the newspaper's journalists were killed because "of their work holding the Russian government and its military to account". At the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the newspaper was forced to stop publishing under pressure from the government. Some of the newspaper's journalists fled Russia and founded Novaya Gazeta Europe.

Conclusions

No matter who you are – a poet or a scientist, a producer or an actor – you can help. The story that "there are no small donations" is well-known to millions of Ukrainians. Because the main thing is regularity and the desire to bring the result to life.

Two dozen Hollywood celebrities raised more than $350 million in one year to help Ukraine. These people simply used their status and audience for a good cause.
